It is important that resistance training is incorporated into any running program, no matter what your age. The routines do not have to be complicated and as is with running, consistency is much more important than perfection.

Most competitive long distance runners supplement their training program with resistance routines. The increased muscular power it yields, particularly in the lower body, gives runners a competitive edge. While racing. In other words, more muscle strength will probably enable them to run a bit faster over the last ΒΌ mile of a race and helps delay the muscular fatigue that causes runners to go anaerobic. These benefits are universal and anyone can use resistance training to boost their running performance.

Certain opposing muscle groups, such as the quadriceps and hamstrings should fall within a certain range of relative strength. The ratio of strength should be roughly 60% in the quadriceps to 40%in the hamstring. Maintaining this ration is good insurance against injury, since it prevents either set of muscles from bearing the brunt of your running.

Resistance training also helps assure a left-right side balance of 50% to 50%, which also helps to guard against injury in much the same way. Not only does a balanced physique guard against potential injury but it looks great too. Below are some of the other benefits.
