Why your workout just isn’t working out!

June 13, 2009 Sports, Zen No Comments

Imagine a place where 1000s of people strive to get fit, but fail time and time again.  Imagine a place where avid gym goers commit years of their lives to exercise, but see little or no results.  Imagine a place where hour long workouts become completely worthless and 100s of reps utterly pointless.  What is this dreaded, time sapping, gym membership wasting place? It’s called …the comfort zone.

We’ve all seen people living in their comfort zone in the gym.  Those people who do the same routine day in, day out, yet wonder why they aren’t seeing results.  The guy who lifts the same weights, in the same order, for the same number of reps.  The woman who does the same cardio routine, at the same low intensity and even reads her book on the bike.

This approach to exercise is fine if you want to maintain a moderate level of fitness and simply keep active, but if you really want to be fitter, faster, stronger and leaner, you have to break out of your comfort zone.  Once you understand how and why we get fitter, you’ll understand why it is so important to challenge your body and bring variety to your workouts.

Survival of the fittest…

You may not realise it, but your body is constantly adapting to your environment.  Spend time in the sun for a day, you’ll get a tan.  Start using the stairs at work, your legs will get stronger and leaner.  This isn’t your body’s way of making you look pretty, it’s your body adapting to the environment and protecting you from the stresses and strains we put ourselves through each day.

“Fitness” in its true sense is all about adaptation.  When we exercise we are deliberately creating a false environment for our body.  On the inside, the post-exercise hormones and chemicals that trigger adaptations have no idea we’re in a gym.  For all our body knows, our 30 minute jog on the treadmill could be a daily run in with a lion.  If it doesn’t adapt and make us fitter, faster, stronger and leaner… we’re going to be breakfast!

The key point is that the body only adapts if it is challenged.  Why would it need to adapt if it can already cope with the challenges it faces?  If it ain’t broke, no need to fix it!  So if you want to “get fitter” you need to push your body beyond what it is used to, which means creating a harsher environment for it – more workouts, heavier weights, more reps, longer runs, faster runs, more exercises, different exercises.  This is known as the “overload zone” and it is the exact opposite of the “comfort zone”.  It is a place where the body is challenged, adaptation is triggered and fitness gains flow.

No pain, no gain?

To achieve “overload” you need to increase the Frequency, Intensity, Time or Type of your workouts (just remember FITT).  The overload zone doesn’t need to hurt, it’s simply the point where things are no longer comfortable.  It’s those extra few reps, those extra few kilograms or that extra minute on the treadmill.

Take a scale of 1 – 10, if your comfort zone is a 6, your overload zone occurs at 7 and above.  The “no pain, no gain” approach is a little bit old school and might apply to competitive athletes or bodybuilders who need to perform at a 9 or even a 10.  For your average gym goer “no discomfort, no gain” is closer to what is needed, but it doesn’t quite have the same ring to it!

NASCAR: Tony Stewart Consolidates as the Leader of the Sprint Cup

June 13, 2009 Sports, Zen No Comments

In the middle of a sunny afternoon in Pennsylvania, the driver Tony Stewart, who has extensive experience in the Sprint Series and in the other categories of NASCAR and also owns his own team, Stewart Haas Racing, earned his first victory of the season when he amazingly imposed himself at the Pocono 500, fourteenth event of the year that was held at the Pocono Raceway. This victory also impressive due to a serious accident he suffered during the last training session causing that he had to use a backup car for the main event, being forced to start from the bottom in spite of having obtained the pole position, also has its historical significance since Stewart became the first owner and driver at the same time to win a race of the Sprint Cup in more than 10 years. Last time something like this took place was in 1998 when Ricky Ruud, one of the best drivers in NASCAR history, came to the top of the podium in Martinsville. Thanks to the good performance shown at the Pocono 500, Stewart has successfully been placed first in the drivers general standings with a considerable amount of 2043 points, which fills him with optimism to remain steadfast in his position and that opens the doors to remain firm in the run with high expectations of repeating the glorious feat of being crowned champion of the highest level of NASCAR for the third time. This time, the skills of the Chevrolet #14 driver lead him to move from the last position to the top spots, where he got involved in a tight contest with Carl Edwards, David Reutimann, Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman. Stewart was able to pass through them and for a period of 39 laps, he was in charge of setting the pace of the competition. As the race was passing by, the difficulty of the contest increased as none of the pilots lowered their level of competition; on the contrary, it increased to exert a strong pressure on one another with the intention of making each other lose concentration, but as it was demonstrated, the superiority of Stewart was unattainable. He bravely resisted the attacks and was not intimidated by any of his opponents. With an intelligent but somewhat risky strategy of not entering to the pits area, Tony Stewart avoided wasting time and was able to remain among the top positions, although this meant that he could run out of fuel. However, Stewart gave a great demonstration of his driving skills as a professional driver strategically accelerating and braking at the right time, taking all possible advantage of his car and making the most out of the fuel, which lasted to the whole event. Realizing that he could run out of fuel at any moment, Stewart took advantage of a moment when the other drivers left the track to refuel when there were 37 laps to finish the race and moved forward as fast as he could, leaving Edwards and Reutimann behind, who thinking that he wouldn’t be able to finish pushed him as much as they could, but Stewart was more clever, managing to get to the finish line where he was expected by the checkered flag that made him the winner.

F1: Jenson Button, an Unstoppable Leader

June 13, 2009 Sports, Zen No Comments

With an absolute control, the Briton Jenson Button dominated the Grand Prix of Turkey, seventh event of the F1 season, from start to finish, event in which the skillful driver of the Brawn GP team won his sixth victory of the year, consolidating his leading position in the overall ranking of drivers where he has the considerable amount of 61 points, 26 points away of his teammate Rubens Barrichello, who remains in the second place. For the German driver of Red Bull, Sebastian Vettel, having won the position pole position was not enough to cope with Button’s superiority, who took advantage of a slip of Vettel before the completion the first lap, and showing his driving skills, he performed a quick action, moving forward and surpassing Vettel just as they were passing by the first turn of the track. Without a doubt, leaving the track during a turn was a mistake that cost dearly to the German and the price he had to pay was seen as he was displaced from his position, which from then on was taken firmly and convincingly by the great driver of Brawn GP. After this feat, Jenson Button was in charge of setting the pace of competition; very well positioned at the head of the competition, it seemed there was no way for the rest of the drivers to get near to that powerful car that is so well supported with high technology and with the extensive knowledge of the engineer and owner of the team, Ross Brawn. The whole event was focused on Button who, with a successful strategy of only entering the pit area twice and with the organized and efficient work of his team that performed as quickly as possible, was able to maintain his position, moving quickly away from his closest pursuers, taking away any chance to reach him. While this was happening, behind Button there was a strong battle for the second position between the drivers of the Red Bull team, the Australian Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, where after a very tight fight, it was the Australian who took the second place. This new triumph of Jenson Button demonstrates once again the high level of competition that the Brawn GP team has, which in a very intelligent and profitable way has been able to exploit the talent of a driver who many believed would not have a bright future, but thanks to the wise decisions of Ross Brawn along with the support of his team, Button has managed to break with that perception and become the best driver of the season, shadowing those who have been world-renowned in previous seasons. It’s quite clearly that Brawn GP has well established their main goal of remaining as leaders with Jenson Button in the highest position of the tournament. If all continues to be done as before, we could anticipate a glorious future for a team that debuted this season and by taking the wise decision of combining a great pilot with a great car is becoming unstoppable.

An important underlying in any system of thought is the ability to decide on when do you want to start something that you have long wanted to happen. If you are a person who likes softball a lot and you always dream of becoming one of the best players, then you should never waste time doing it. Life is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is already high time for you to weed out your choices and leave the best option there is. Intelligent selection will surely make your efforts be paid off in a short span of time.

Racing Thrills: Ocean, Land or Air?

June 13, 2009 Sports, Zen No Comments

Man is undoubtedly attracted to both speed and intense rivalry, be it on the ocean, land or in the heavens, judging by how frequently these three elements are taken on by the masters of racing. Each high velocity sport offers both riveting thrills and bone-breaking spills – but which of these full-throttle races reigns supreme?

Extreme power-boating

Extreme power-boating has been around for quite some time, although the regulated F1 version was first inaugurated less than three decades ago. Based on Formula One motor racing, the powerboats are effectively the thoroughbreds of the oceans’ depths.

The boats, tunnel hull catamarans, are specifically designed for extreme speed and exceptional manoeuvrability. The design creates an air cushion under the hull so that when the craft is barrelling along at full speed, a neck-breaking 240kph, only a few inches of the craft actually touches the water, giving one the impression that the boat is literally flying in the air.

As with F1, power-boat racing takes place at 13 different international venues on the standard H2O track; a 350m circuit set out on either a river, lake or a balmy bay, sheltered from the worst of the elements. Again, emulating their race buddies on terra firma, qualifying periods determine the grid and specialised timing apparatus records each performance, with championship points handed out to the quickest.

Although power-boat racing has grown in popularity and regular action includes 360° barrel rolls, with the hapless crew knocked out cold at times, as well as the occasional ‘full ejection’ of the crew from the craft, it hasn’t captured as much attention as its land based counterparts.

Red Bull Air Race World Championships

Then there’s the Red Bull Air Race World Championships, a hair-raising event where accomplished pilots rocket their aircraft at full speed around a demanding obstacle course in the sky. Pilots fly against the clock doing the tightest of turns through a slalom course consisting of 20m high ‘Air Gates’.

Again, the championship is contested at different venues throughout the world, with the lion’s share of the sky tracks set out above a body of water….just in case they miss the mark. Air racing, the new kid on the racing block, has only been contested at its highest level since 2003 and, while it has its fair share of supporters, its still motor racing that commands the most attention!

Nothing beats Formula One motor racing

Perhaps it’s the deafening shriek of the powerful engines, the charisma of the championship drivers or the constant threat of an untimely collision between racing cars, but nothing quite matches the exhilaration of motor racing.

If in any doubt as to the pure pedigree of Formula One, why not take the challenge and drive an F1 car? Dedicated motor racing companies in South Africa can organise a day at the track, either as a corporate event, or simply a real spoiler for that all-important person in your life.

Fantastic Racing offers the ultimate corporate event in South Africa: the unique opportunity to experience racing awesome race cars – from road vehicles to F1 cars – at 3 of its top race tracks in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

French Open – Kuztnesova Beats World No.1 Safina at Roland Garros

June 13, 2009 Sports, Zen No Comments

The 23-year-old Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, world No.7, played consistently in the final of the French Open and beat the world No.1 Dinara Safina in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Both Russians have grow playing each other, but a more determined and calmed Kuznetsova controlled his emotions to a point that for her it was just another match in which she needed to enjoy and play the game she loves.

Safina started the tournament very strong, but getting into the quarterfinals and semifinals, the world No.1 slowed down and her aggressiveness decreased. On the other hand, Kuznetsova got better with every game, until her strong ground strokes were hard to stop even for the greatest players, such as Serena Williams.

During the first set, Safina’s anxiety showed by making double faults in several occasions and converting too many errors when she didn’t have to, whereas Kuztnetsova started with so much calm and confidence that her game flowed consistently. That gave Svetlana a lead and the set with a 6-4.

In the second set, Dinara started a little better and managed to tie the set 2-2. However, the good shots of Kuznetsova broke Safina’s serve and this let Dinara to lose the control of her emotions and become desperate in key moments of the match. At the end, the one-time Grand Slam champion closed the game with a strong mentality while Safina double-faulted once again to close the match and her opportunity to win her first major.

At the end of the game, Safina broke into tears and slammed her racket to the court showing her frustration for her fail. Kuztnesova, in a respectful way for Safina, did not celebrate in a big way, instead she just waved her hands to the crowd, shake hands and gave a cheek kiss to her opponent and finally hugged her coach and her friends, in a way of thanking them their support.

“It’s like having a second baby, you know? One baby you’re happy, and second baby you’re even more happy,” Said Kuznetsova. “It was tough. But I made myself believe in me and not think about the victory. Definitely it was a lot of emotions inside of me, but I control it.”

On the other hand, Safina expressed that she couldn’t handle the pressure, in view of the fact that she wanted to win so badly, she couldn’t control the emotions inside of her. She became desperate on the court and didn’t play her best as she did at the beginning of the tournament.  Now with another loss in a Grand Slam, Safina hopes to learn from her mistakes and will try to put this bad experiences aside so she can focus on what is coming for her in the future.

As some people have criticized the world ranking of Dinara Safina, we hope she can demonstrate at Wimbledon that she deserves the No.1 spot. Additionally for Kuztnetsova we also hope she could increase her ranking and could be in the top spots as well of raising her performance as she has done it in this French Open.
