2016 Olympics

November 19, 2009 Zen No Comments

Chicago, Madrid, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro are the cities on the short list for the International Olympic Committee to host the 2016 Olympic Games. Doha, Prague and Baku were recently eliminated from the potential hosts lists by the IOC executive board. IOC president Jacques Rogge said: “All bids were of a high standard. It’s a tribute to the health of the Olympic Movement that the field was so strong.” The IOC will be selecting the winning city on October 2, 2009. The city with the best chances of making a solid bid in terms of infrastructure, support and money is Chicago. Should they manage to do it, Chicago would become host for the first American Olympics since 1996 when Atlanta hosted them (and famously had a pipe bomb scare). The city of Chicago however will need to improve their technical standing after the IOC rated them third in the rankings in this category. Chicago 2016’s chairman, Patrick Ryan said there was a lot more work that needed to be done to improve their bid after they were selected in the latest round which dropped the list to just four cities. “Four cities is better than five,” he said. “Three would have been better than four. But we’re very proud to be one of the four. It’s exhilarating.” Rio de Janeiro, who hosted the Pan-American Games in 2007, would be the first South American city in history to host the Olympics if they were offered the 2016 Olympics. Madrid, meanwhile, is betting that since they were in third place behind London and Paris in the race for the 2012 Games, they may stand a chance for this one, coming up. Tokyo is also making their hopes known. And given that they haven’t hosted the games since 1964, they feel like it should really go to them.”We are very happy with the decision by the IOC,” said Tokyo 2016 chief Ichiro Kono of the decision to include Tokyo in the list of finalists. “We are also delighted with the evaluation but we have not seen it yet and we must now analyze it very carefully to strengthen our weak points and make our strong points stronger,” he continued. Doha, the capital of Qatar, actually hosted the 2006 Asian Games and was considered as a possible wild card for the 2016 Olympics event, but the city didn’t make the cut despite having retained a high-powered team to run their campaign. Some of the IOC’s executive board members had said that they felt a city of only 500,000 was just too small, not to mention that the heat in the summer would have been unbearable.
