When One Mistake is a Gun Mistake Sports Careers Can be Jeopardized

Violence in sports committed by athletes, especially when guns are involved, can affect and even end careers. Even an athlete’s freedom could be at risk.

Ask New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress, who in 12 months went from Super Bowl hero to prison inmate without his gun leaving his pocket. Now, Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas is facing questions by authorities for bringing a gun into the locker room, ostensibly to impress a teammate who had lost money to Arenas in a card game on a team flight and hadn’t settled his debt.

Burress, who accidentally shot himself in the leg with an illegal gun in a New York City nightclub in November 2008, was sentenced to two years in prison in late September. His best case scenario is for release in May of 2011, meaning he will have missed two football seasons. He will be 34 by the time the 2011 season starts, which is on the old side for receivers not named Jerry Rice. His playing career is likely over.

Arenas brought two unloaded guns into the Wizards practice locker room on Dec. 21. Reportedly, this was the upshot of a back and forth exchange on a team flight between Arenas and Javaris Crittenton where Crittenton had jokingly threatened to shoot Arenas in his surgically repaired knee.

Arenas has issued the following statement:

“As I have said before, I had kept the four unloaded handguns in my house in Virginia, but then moved them over to my locker at the Verizon Center to keep them away from my young kids,” the statement read. “I brought them without any ammunition into the District of Columbia, mistakenly believing that the recent change in the DC gun laws allowed a person to store unloaded guns in the District. On Monday, December 21st, I took the unloaded guns out in a misguided effort to play a joke on a teammate. Contrary to some press accounts, I never threatened or assaulted anyone with the guns and never pointed them at anyone. Joke or not, I now recognize that what I did was a mistake and was wrong. I should not have brought the guns to DC in the first place, and I now realize that there’s no such thing as joking around when it comes to gun-even if unloaded.”

Despite the contrition, Arenas has put his own career and the Wizards’ season in jeopardy. He has been called into a series of meetings with federal authorities, and recently was suspended indefinitely by NBA commissioner David Stern.

Arenas is one of the best players in the league and the focus of the Wizards offense. He has started all 31 games in which he has played, averaging nearly 23 points and seven assists per contest. Some veteran observers of the NBA expect Stern to show his aversion to violence in sports by suspending Arenas for the remainder of the season. This would cripple the Wizards, a team with playoff aspirations going into this season, and potentially force the team into a series of personnel moves.

Despite the ignorance that created this mess, Arenas is aware of the affects of his actions and has expressed regret. “I am very sorry for the effect that my serious lapse in judgment has had on my team, my teammates, the National Basketball Association and its fans,” Arenas said. “I want to apologize to everybody for letting them down with my conduct, and I promise to do better in the future.”

Unfortunately for the Wizards, their fans, those holding tickets to see Arenas and his team play, and especially the African American youth who see Arenas as a role model, Arenas’ brush with violence in sports is very likely to put that future on hold, and could temporarily cost him his freedom.

Tips For Fitting Exercise Into A Busy Schedule

1. Make exercise a priority.  Exercise and fitness have to be important to you or it will never fit into your schedule.  Things that are truly important almost always get added to our schedules. Take care of your body now and it will take care of you later.

2. Schedule your workouts. Enter your workouts into your calendar/schedule and commit to them.  Making exercise a part of your regular schedule will make it easier for you to stay on track long term.  Once your body gets used to working out you will feel like something is missing on days that you miss. Let the people in your circle know about your workout schedule and how important it is to you. This can eliminate some of them from pulling you away for other things during your workout times.

3. Exercise first thing in the morning.  Getting your cardio or resistance training in the morning will prevent other things from popping up and taking the place of your workout time.  If things get crazy later in the day you won’t need to sacrifice your training in order to deal with unexpected issues.  Training in the morning is also a great way to jump start your metabolism after it has come to a grinding halt while you were sleeping.  A good 30 minutes of interval training will burn a ton of calories and keep your metabolism elevated for hours.

4. Use your lunch time.  Going for a brisk walk around the parking lot will not only help keep you on track but it will also be a good way to reduce work related stress.  You can even have a protein shake and a piece of fruit afterwards so that you don’t have to use more of your lunch time to eat a traditional meal. Pull your co-workers with you for some added accountability. Please note: If you hate your co-workers then inviting them might be counterproductive..lol.
 
5. Make it a family affair.  Taking the family swimming, hiking or roller blading/skating are a few ways to enjoy family time and fitness all at once.  These activities are fun and burn calories without it feeling like exercise. The secret is to find things that you enjoy.  You are much more likely to continue if it is something that you look forward to doing.

Remember, you have to be honest with yourself.  Are you too busy? Or, are you too busy making excuses? Exercise and fitness have to be top priorities or you will always be stuck in the “I’ll start on Monday” cycle.  As always, let me know if you have any questions.

Brock stands at six feet-three inches tall and weighs 265 pounds. With this figures it is without a doubt he is a monster in the heavyweight division. The key to his domination in the cage is his size, well there are really few guys who can match his weight.

When someone fights Brock inside the cage it would not be an MMA pound for pound match but rather a MMA pound for pound and a half match. And even if someone at 265 pounds decides to fight him there would still be less chance to beat him since normally 265 pounder guys really moves slowly.

But that is not the case with Brock, he has an excellent cardio, very athletic, and has a speed of a 200 pounder guy, this proved to be a huge advantage in his part, being able to oversize the opponent without compromising his speed. Brock has an excellent wrestling background which made him take-down his opponents at will and just deliver his ground and pound.

The very danger in his ground and pound is that he is able to control his opponent in the ground while he is pounding which makes it hard for the opponent to escape his clutches. Another thing about his ground and pound is that the speed of the punches, he has lightning speed punches with knock-out power and it is proven just like how he knocked out the hall of famer Randy Couture. But a smart fighter like Frank Mir was able to see through his weakness which was his grappling. Although Brock dominated in the stand-up and striking, the moment that Frank Mir got hold of him, it was over. Frank Mir delivered a knee-bar on Lesnar which made him tap out.

Now another opponent is challenging Brock for the championship belt, and it is no other than the biggest fist in the UFC, Shane Carwin. Shane Carwin has a knock-out power behind those huge fists and to add to that he is very accurate with his strikes. In terms of stability, Shane has a very strong jaw which allows him to withstand strikes from powerful strikers. Now, Shane Carwin has challenged Brock for a shot at the title and if Brock accepts the challenge, surely it would be a must watch event as two of the biggest fists in the UFC go toe to toe for the championship belt. Whoever wins the bout would surely leave the other either bloodied up or knocked -out cold as both of this fighters are determined to win and be the champion of their division.

To conclude, some may hate Brock but the truth is that Lesnar has been doing great past few years. Some think he should go back to WWE where he belongs, but I say otherwise. WWE is fake and it was not something that a professional like him should have joined at first place. There is a lot of money in WWE but the fun factor is gone.
